Challenges Faced During Capacity Development And How Are They Solved?

Capacity development is one of the pillars of the National Disability Insurance Scheme or NDIS. The system involves providing funding for the supports that persons with disabilities need to opt for. They are called participants, and to assist them, support workers in Mooroolbark, Ringwood and Dandenong work with them every step of the way. However, capacity development comes with various challenges which we will discuss here. In addition, we will also take a look at how support workers help participants overcome them.

Typically, capacity development focuses on building skills and confidence to enhance independence. In this journey, both individuals and their assistants experience various problems such as:-

Difficulty in Navigating the NDIS System

NDIS can sometimes become difficult to navigate due to its intricate rules, processes, and jargon. Many individuals find it hard to traverse the scheme and access funding. This complexity can impact their ability to develop essential capacities.

The solution to this problem is assistants providing clear and concise information related to their plan. Besides, through the disability support service in Mooroolbark and the other suburbs, they connect participants with support coordinators, plan managers and even service providers.

Limited Skilled Providers

Capacity development is facilitated by skilled providers, such as support workers, occupational therapists and psychologists. However, in certain regions, accessing them can become challenging due to limited workforce.

Today, many providers are addressing these issues and providing their supports through telehealth. To bridge the gap, organisations are also turning to workshops where individuals are being trained.

Participant Readiness

This is another challenge in capacity development. Not all participants are willing to engage in capacity-building activities due to factors such as lack of confidence, past trauma or fear of failure. Their lack of confidence can act as a barrier to participation.

To overcome this challenge, professionals providing NDIS disability services in Ringwood and the other suburbs take person-centred approaches. They encourage individuals to achieve smaller goals first and then proceed to achieve the bigger ones.

Funding Constraints

Many participants lack the funding which can be a challenge for them as well as their assistants when it comes to capacity building. Though the scheme provides funding for capacity development, it may not always cover each and every supports. Furthermore, participants may not be able to stretch their budgets.

To resolve this issue, NDIS providers in Dandenong and the other suburbs advocate for the participants and ensure that they receive the resources required to succeed.

Cultural Diversity

Participants face additional barriers due to language and cultural misunderstandings that can make NDIS access more difficult. For this reason, support workers provide culturally sensitive services, where they employ multilingual staff and offer translated materials to improve their accessibility.

Service Coordination

Capacity development requires coordination between providers. However, a lack thereof can lead to inadequate support.

To overcome this problem, NDIS providers communicate with the individuals transparently, determine their goals and aspirations and help them in their journey.

So, these are some of the challenges that participants face but can overcome with the help of their assistants.
